Mahmoud Saad


Senior academic and experienced clinician with 23 years of teaching and clinical experience in the UK and internationally. Mahmoud is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK. He was the module leader of the musculoskeletal unit within the MSc. program at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK for many years. He has extensive clinical experience in private practice and National Health Service in the UK. Mahmoud teaches internationally in the field of musculoskeletal and sport physiotherapy since 2006 and acts as an education quality officer at Primephysio Training UK. He is the chairman of the Orthopaedic Manual Therapy Academy, an interest group with the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT).

Course Introduction: 

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is considered one of the most complex joints in the body. It is highly functional a synovial joint, with a unique structure and mechanics. The joint has a clear connection with cervical spine articular, neural, and myofascial structures. Understanding the aetiology, symptoms, and classification of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) as well as the connection with cervical spine is essential to enable clinicians to identify and manage patients with TMJ dysfunction.


The aim of this programme is to equip the participant with the knowledge and practical skills to assess and manage patients with temporomandibular and associated cervical spine mechanical related problems.

Course Outline:

Intensive 7 hours course interactive and practical course that covers the following:

  1. Functional anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of the temporomandibular joint and cervical spine.

  2. Aetiology, differential diagnosis, and clinical classifications of temporomandibular disorders.

The above component will be discussed using an interactive task-based approach to keep the audience engaged. No boring old school style theoretical knowledge. Only information that informs clinical practice.

  1. Treatment of the temporomandibular dysfunction (practical hands-on lab) includes:

    1. Essential evidence based manual techniques for TMJ and cervical spine

    2. Postural retraining exercises for head and neck

    3. Dry needling

    4. Acupoints

    5. Self-management strategies

  2. Outcome measures for TMJ related disorders.

All the above practical techniques will be wrapped with critical discussion of supporting research evidence.



This course is aimed at physiotherapists, students, and assistants.

Other professionals such as occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors with interest in this topic are welcome to participate.
