Bernard Tonks

Bernard is a Physiotherapist who graduated from the University of Toronto in 1986. He has extensive experience in neurological rehab and orthopaedics. Since 1993, he has worked in private practice and in 1997 became a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapists. He has completed numerous courses in Vestibular Rehabilitation and in 2001, completed a competency based certification course in Atlanta, Georgia. He has been treating clients with vestibular dysfunctions since 1995. Since 2000, he has instructed courses in vestibular rehabilitation throughout Canada as well as internationally

Introductory Vestibular Rehab. course:

 A comprehensive, evidence based introductory course.


Course Content:

  • General anatomy of the vestibular system

  • Pathophysiology of vestibular disorders

  • Etiology

  • Signs & symptoms of:

  1. Unilateral vestibular lesions (UVL)

  2. Bilateral vestibular lesions (BVL)

  3. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

  • Differential diagnosis of the dizzy patient

  • Cervicogenic dizziness

  • Whiplash & the dizzy patient

  • VR and concussion

  • Critical Elements of the clinical examination:

  • Oculomotor exam

  • Motion sensitivity testing

  • Balance and gait assessment

  • BPPV assessment and treatment

  • Treatment of UVL and BVL

  • Case studies and practical time, lots of video


Advanced Vestibular Rehab course

This one day course is appropriate for therapists who have taken an introductory course and either have not had the opportunity to implement their knowledge extensively or would like to review and enhance their skills.


Course Content:

  • A review of the assessment and treatment of BPPV, UVL and BVL clients. Lecture and practical sessions

  • Pathophysiology of selected otologic and non otologic causes of dizziness not reviewed in detail during the introductory course. Examples: central dizziness, (migraine associated vertigo), and SCD. In particular, the role of vestibular rehab in concussion management will be presented

  • Advances in the assessment and treatment of these pathologies as well as cervicogenic dizziness

  • Videos of nystagmus and oculomotor findings

  • A variety of case studies will be presented

  • Review quiz
