The course will give the participants an in-depth overview of detailed physical therapy evaluation for children with cerebral palsy (CP). According to the recent related literature, expectations for outcomes and prognosis for those children will be explained. Also, goal-directed physical therapy interventions for non- ambulatory and ambulatory children with CP will be covered according to recent systematic reviews. In addition, a comprehensive evaluation of upper limbs and hand function problems in children with CP and different interventions for those problems will be given. Moreover, safe and ergonomic-based exercises for children, their families, and therapists will be also clarified. Full assessment and intervention will be applied to different cases of CP.

Arafat has more than 12 years of experience teaching undergraduate students in the physical therapy bachelor’s degree program. Currently, he is a lecturer at the Department of Pediatric Physical Therapy, Faculty of Physical Therapy, Horus University, Egypt. He has been teaching biomechanics and pediatric physical therapy to undergraduate students since 2011. He is very interested in the research related to evidence-based pediatric physical therapy and the prognosis of children with cerebral palsy. He has been passionate about pediatric physical therapy practice since 2008. He has been evaluating and developing physical therapy plans for children with cerebral palsy for more than 15 years

Objectives:

  1. Know the normal motor development of children.

  2. Understand motor learning and motor planning.

  3. Differentiate between the types of children with cerebral palsy.

  4. Identify the expected prognosis for each type of cerebral palsy according to the latest evidence.

  5. Apply a detailed comprehensive assessment for children with cerebral palsy either non-ambulatory or ambulatory.

  6. Design and apply a physical therapy program for improving gross motor skills in children with cerebral palsy.

  7. Apply complete assessment for impaired upper limbs and hands in children with cerebral palsy.

  8. Design and apply different interventions for upper limbs and hand problems in children with CP.

  9. Understand the reasons for referral of the children with CP for Botulinum toxin-A injection, selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR), and orthopedic surgeries.

  10. Identify the clinical guidelines for physical therapy before and after Botulinum toxin-A injection, SDR, and orthopedic surgeries.

  11. Identify the orthosis used in the different types of cerebral palsy.

Module No. 1 – Online Teaching

Title: Introduction

3. Cerebral palsy and its different types:

  • Underlying pathology for each type.

  • Clinical features for each type.

  • Associated disorders for each type.

  • Predicted prognosis for each type.

Module No. 2 - Face-to-face Teaching  - (3 days)

Title: Physical Therapy Management of Cerebral Palsy    

 

1. Comprehensive physical therapy assessment for children with cerebral palsy.

  • Neurological assessment

  • Musculoskeletal assessment

  • Using screening and comprehensive scales for the assessment of gross motor skills

2. Design a physical therapy program for the improvement of gross motor skills in children with cerebral palsy.

  • Identification of the treatment goals.

  • Goal-directed physical therapy interventions for non-ambulatory and ambulatory children with CP.

  • Comprehensive assessment and intervention will be applied to a variety of cases with CP.

3. Prediction of prognosis and outcomes for children with CP.

  1. Predictors of ambulation for CP

  2. Ontario Motor Growth curves.

4. Assessment and treatment of different gait abnormalities in children with cerebral palsy.

  1. Different methods of assessment of gait.

  2. Setting goals and treatment plans for each type of pathological gait.

Module No. 3 – Face-to-face Teaching - 

Title: Rehabilitation of Upper Limbs in Cerebral Palsy   

1. Overview of hand functions

2. Assessment and treatment of upper limbs and hand dysfunction in children with cerebral palsy.

  • Neurological assessment.

  • Musculoskeletal assessment.

  • Using of screening and comprehensive scales for assessment of upper limb function and fine motor skills.

3. Suggested treatment for fine motor skills and different strategies for upper limbs rehabilitation in children with CP.

4. Clinical decision-making in the management of children with CP.

​5. Comprehensive assessment and intervention will be applied to a variety of cases with CP.
